Carineta guianaensis View in CoL n. sp.
( Fig. 3 View FIG ; Table 3)
TYPE MATERIAL. — Holotype: “ FRENCH GUIANA: 41 / km SE Roura on Kaw Rd., / 5-7-VI-2005, J. E. Eger / & M.T. Messenger, coll. // N04°32.214’ / W052°07.420’ / 272 m MV Light ”, 1 ♂ ( FSCA). GoogleMaps
Paratype: Same data as holotype, 1 ♂ ( AFSC).
ETYMOLOGY. — The species is named from the country of origin.
DISTRIBUTION. — The species is only known from French Guiana.
DIAGNOSIS. — Carineta guianaensis n. sp. can be differentiated from multiple species of Carineta by the lines of infuscation within the apical cells. The new species can be differentiated from those species with striped infuscation by the presence of mesothoracic markings, which are absent in C. cinara Distant, 1883 , C. cyrili Champanhet, 1999 , C. dolosa Boulard, 1986 , C. doxiptera Walker, 1858 , C. modesta n. sp., C. socia Uhler, 1875 , and C. viridicollis ( Germar, 1830) . Of the remaining species that possess mesonotal markings with striped infuscation in the apical cells, all have a body length greater than 18 mm.
DESCRIPTION
Ground color tawny. Paratype has some green on head, postclypeus and pronotal collar, which suggests that fresh specimens may be greenish tawny.
Head slightly wider than mesonotum, ground color with fuscous area surrounding ocelli, covered with long, black pile. Ocelli rosaceus. Eyes golden. Postclypeus ground color with ventral fuscous stripes on either side of central sulcus, covering medial portion of the nine transverse grooves, from apex to junction with anteclypeus where stripes fuse medially. Sparse, long black pile on body of postclypeus, white pile laterally. Gena ground color. Lorum ground color with fuscous medial stripe. Anteclypeus ground color with medial fuscous stripe. Long black pile on ventral head and anteclypeus, long white pile on medial gena, lorum and sides of anteclypeus. Rostrum tawny, lateral surfaces of posterior mentum, lateral surfaces of labium and tip fuscous, reaching to hind coxae. Scape, proximal pedicel and annulus at junction of pedicel and first flagellar segment green, remaining antennae fuscous.
Dorsal thorax ground color. Pronotum ground color with fuscous marks along paramedian fissures, posterior third of paramedian fissures extending posteriorly to ambient fissure and fusing and expanding slightly at midline. Pronotum with long black pile on dorsum, longer and more dense laterally. Lateral margin of pronotal collar absent. Submedian and lateral sigillae margined with fuscous producing four obconical lines, marks expand posteriorly.Submedian sigilla linear mark and medial portion of lateral sigilla mark incomplete towards anterior margin of mesonotum in paratype.Fuscous spot between anterior arms of cruciform elevation including scutal depressions, extending anteriorly half way to mark at posterior submedial sigillae and laterally fusing with mark at posterior lateral sigillae, mark reduced medially in paratype so not joined medially.Long black pile dorsally, long golden pile laterally, posteriorly, and between anterior arms of cruciform elevation.Ventral thoracic segments ground color except fuscous trochantin 2, basisternum 2, posterior trochantin 3 and medial third and posterior margin of basisternum 3.
Tegmina and wings hyaline. Venation ground color, becoming fuscous distally, except fuscous median cubitus posterior + anal vein 1, anal vein 2 + 3 and basal vein of clavus, and fuscous spot on wing base. Basal membrane grayish. Very light paired infuscation stripes in apical cells. Hind wing venation tawny except fuscous anal veins. Vanal fold, anal cell 3 and anal cell 2 along anal veins 3 and posterior anal vein 2 gray.
Legs ground color with fuscous stripes on posterior front femora and anterior and posterior of middle and hind femora, and fuscous distal tibiae. Legs green with tawny lateral fore femora and middle portion of tibiae in paratype. Coxae and trochanters light tawny. Fore femora with oblique proximal, secondary, and tertiary spines, castaneous with fuscous base, and very small fuscous apical spine. Proximal spine more oblique than parallel secondary and tertiary spines. Metatarsus and distal pretarsus fuscous, mesotarsus and proximal pretarsus tawny. Tibial spurs and comb castaneous. Pretarsal claws color fuscous with piceous tips.
Male operculum tawny, green in paratype, with fuscous base and lateral margin, curving posterolateral margin, posterior margin curved, to curved posteromedial margin, reaching to posterior sternite II. Lateral margin with approximate right angle when viewed laterally. Medial margin not meeting but covering tympanal cavity. Meracanthus fuscous, ground color only on lateral margin. Opercula covered with sparse golden pile, longer pile radiates from margin.
Abdominal tergites, epipleurites and sternites tawny, sternites VI-VIII darker medially, fuscous medial posterior margin in sternite VII. Paratype with light fuscous band nead 3-8 and sternites V-VIII becoming larger in posterior segments. Abdomen covered with sparse short, golden and long, black pile dorsally, more dense on posterior tergite margins. Male sternite VIII dark tawny, fuscous laterally tawny in paratype. Timbal with six ribs.
Male pygofer tawny with light fuscous dorsal beak and lateral region and covered with long black pile. Anal styles fuscous, not as long as dorsal beak. Median uncus lobe fuscous, short with rounded terminus, lateral lobes not as long as median lobes. Pygofer upper lobe short with rounded terminus folded medially. Basal lobe of pygofer small with long, thick, golden, radiating pile. Claspers fuscous, flattened, dramatically narrowing to point at apex from wide base. Aedeagus rounded and fuscous.
Female is unknown.
