Type:— Notothylas orbicularis (Schweinitz) Sullivant in A. Gray.
Plants prostrate or erect (not in Australia), rosettes typically orbicular or sub-orbicular, ecostate, thallus solid. Dorsal surface of thallus smooth, ridged or lamellate.Androecium with 1–4 antheridia per cavity. Involucre oblong, cylindrical or tubular, erect, horizontal or sub-horizontal, dorsal or ventral, smooth, plicate or lamellate. Sporogone very short, partially emergent or completely enclosed within the involucre, columella present or absent. Spores yellow, brown or black (not in Australia), ornamentation smooth to vermiculate or spinulose, often with a large central projection on the dorsal face. Pseudoelaters absent or present, 1–3 celled, yellowish-brown to dark brown, purplish-brown or purple, subquadrate to elongate with or without irregular or annular bandings.
Etymology:— Notothylas from the Greek nôto meaning dorsal in reference to the position of the sporophyte on the dorsal surface of the thallus and - thylakos meaning a sack in reference to the pouch-like or sack-like shape of the reduced and protective involucres typical of the genus.
