Oropezella costaricensis View in CoL sp. nov.
( Figs 34–38 View FIGURES 34 – 38 , 114)
Diagnosis. Thorax brown, notopleuron, postpronotal lobe, scutellum and mesopleuron slightly paler; scutum with scattered pale brown pruinescence except presutural region of scutum bare; abdomen brown, tergites 1–3 slightly paler than the remaining segments; coxae pale yellow; femora, fore and mid tibia pale brown, paler near base; hind tibia pale brown, darkened towards apex; tarsi brown except tarsomeres 1 and 2 paler near base.
Etymology. This species is named in reference to its distribution, Costa Rica.
Description. Holotype male. Body: 3.3 mm. Wing: 2.2 mm. Head: antenna pale brown located slightly above middle of head; scape as long as pedicel; postpedicel conical, twice longer than wide, as long as scape and pedicel combined; stylus bare, apical, long, about 2.6 times length of antenna. Ocellar triangle weakly protuberant; 2 pairs of ocellar setae, anterior elongate pair proclinate 45º and posterior pair thin and short. Holoptic; frons long, more than half length of face. Proboscis yellow; palpus brown bearing 1 long apical and 1 shorter lateral bristles. Postcranium dark brown with pale brown to gray thin pruinescence; postoculars elongate, scattered, upper setae longest. Thorax: scutum and mesopleuron with scattered pale brown pruinescence except for presutural region of scutum shiny, bare; brown except notopleuron, postpronotal lobe, scutellum and mesopleuron slightly paler. Bristles thin, short and scattered; acr and dc uniserial. Differentiated bristles: 2 npl (1 lower short and discreet and 1 long and robust above); posterior dc not distinct from anterior dc; 1 pal short and thin; 1 long and strong apical sctl and 1 lateral weaker bristle, about two-thirds length of apical. Wing (Fig. 114): sub-hyaline with purple and green iridescence; R1 meeting C at middle of wing; cell dm emitting 2 veins; cell cu p present. Legs: coxae pale yellow; femora, fore and mid tibiae pale brown, paler near base; hind tibia pale brown becoming brown towards apex; tarsi brown, except tarsomeres 1 and 2 paler near base. Legs with short and weak bristles: mid tibia with 1A at middle and 1D short and weak near base; 1A rather strong near apex and some V elongated bristles on hind femur. Abdomen: tergites brown, with tergites 1–3 slightly paler; sternites slightly paler than tergites; bristles brown, short, scattered and thin; shiny with pruinescence only on tergite 8. Terminalia: hypandrium elongate, about 1.7 times longer than wide with truncate to slightly convex apex ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 34 – 38 ); epandrium short, not deeply cleft dorsally, epandrial lamellae broadly fused basally ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 34 – 38 ); left epandrial lamella slightly shorter than right, with dorsoapical process short and widened apically in dorsal view ( Figs 35, 37 View FIGURES 34 – 38 ); right surstylus slightly shorter than left, broad, with ventral margin concave on basal two-thirds bearing series of small denticles ( Figs 34, 38 View FIGURES 34 – 38 ); left surstylus long, ventrally and inner curved with apex clavate and covered by lumpy circular marks ( Figs 34, 37 View FIGURES 34 – 38 ); articulated distal portion of phallus simple, elongate, more than two-thirds length of basal portion, with long apical bifurcate portion and basal process very short ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 34 – 38 ). Female. Unknown.
Type material. HOLOTYPE ♂, labelled: CR [ COSTA RICA], Puntarenas / Rd. to Rincon 200m / 24km W. Pan-Am. Hwy. / iii–v.1989 / Hanson & Gold ( CNC) (in good condition, except right wing mounted in microslides and abdomen in microtube with glycerin).
Distribution. Costa Rica (Puntarenas).
Remarks. The shape of the male terminalia of this species is very similar to O. falcata sp. nov. and O. undulata sp. nov., mainly the general aspect of the surstyli and the long and articulated distal portion of the phallus. However, O. costaricensis sp. nov. has a very short basal process of the phallus, ventral margin of hypandrium slightly convex, inner margin of the right surstylus bearing small denticles and left surstylus expanded distally with lumpy rounded marks on outer surface. Additionally, in O. costaricensis sp. nov. the scutum is brown while in O. undulata sp. nov. the scutum is yellow on presutural region and brown on the remaining portion.
