Genus Pagodula Monterosato, 1884 View in CoL
The type species of Pagodula was wrongly cited by Radwin & D’ Attilio (1975: 285) as being Murex vaginatus Cristofori & Jan, 1832 by original designation, and later, that citation was wrongly considered a subsequent designation by Houart (2001: 130).
Monterosato’ s extension of Murex carinatus included both the Pleistocene fossil for which the names Murex carinatus Bivona, 1832 and Murex vaginatus Cristofori & Jan, 1832 [which he cited in synonymy] are available, and the Recent form described as Fusus echinatus Kiener, 1840 [which he also cited in synonymy]. The Pleistocene and Recent forms have since been found to represent different species, differing in particular by their protoconchs ( Bouchet & Warén 1985, La Perna 1996). This is a case of misidentified type species covered by Art. 70.3 of the Code. To lift the ambiguity in the identity of the type species of Pagodula , and because it better serves the purpose of taxonomical research to have the Recent form as type species, we here select under Art. 70.3 as type species of Pagodula Monterosato, 1884 Fusus echinatus Kiener, 1840 , misidentified by Monterosato as Murex carinatus Bivona, 1832 .
