Data on the Chilopoda of St. Barthélemy Island is very scarce. In 1847, C.L. Koch described Scolopendra crudelis from “Barthelmi”. Shelley (2006) recorded four species of the genus Scolopendra for this island: S. alternans Leach, 1815 (p. 6 + Shelley 2002: 36) (erroneously noted by Bonato et al. (2016) as “Leach, 1913”; for details see Shelley 2006: 6–7), S. crudelis (p. 13), S. morsitans L., 1758 (p. 5) and S. subspinipes Leach, 1815 (p. 7). Аs for the last two widespread species, they were undoubtedly introduced in this part of the New World.
Questel (2012) recorded from the St. Barthélemy Island S. morsitans (Fig. 27), S. subspinipes , S. alternans , Cormocephalus sp., Otostigmus sp., Newportia sp., “2 not identified genera” of Geophilomorpha and Scutigera sp. Considering all those data and the results of the present study, the scolopendromorph fauna of St. Barthélemy Island currently contains 8 species belonging to 4 genera: Newportia (family Scolopocryptopidae ), Otostigmus , Cormocephalus and Scolopendra (all Scolopendridae ). There are no endemic taxa, while 2 species ( S. morsitans and S. subspinipes ) seem to be introduced on the island due to human activity. Newportia longitarsis virginensis , N. heteropoda and Cormocephalus i. impressus are recorded from the St. Barthélemy Island for the first time.
The lack of species of Scolopocryptops , Newportia (Tidops) , Rhysida and Cryptops , scolopendromorph taxa common in the region, can be explained by the relative youth of the island’s fauna and/or insufficient sampling. Аs the presence of Scolopocryptops , Newportia (Tidops) , Rhysida and Cryptops is quite probable at St. Barthélemy, I include them in the key marked with asterisk.
