Type species. Trachynotothrips striatus sp. nov.
Description. Head wider than long, concave in front of fore ocellus, constricted just behind compound eyes with rounded cheeks, distinctly sculptured with anastomosing striae on cheeks to ventral surface behind compound eyes and frons; postocular area about as long as longitudinal diameter of hind ocelli ( Figs. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 , 8 View FIGURES 8 – 10 ). Frons with five pairs of setae anterior to anterior tentorial pits; mouthcone short and rounded with 3segmented maxillary palps. Compound eyes bulging, without pigmented ommatidia on ventral surface. Ocellar setae I absent; two pairs of postocular setae, at inner and outer angles of compound eyes ( Figs. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 , 8 View FIGURES 8 – 10 ). Antennae 8segmented, segment I with two dorsal apical setae; segments III and IV with forked sensecones; number of setae on segments III to V as follows: 4, 5, 6 ( Figs. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 4 , 9 View FIGURES 8 – 10 ).
Pronotum wider than long, distinctly sculptured with transverse anastomosing striae; two pairs of posteroangular setae and two pairs of posteromarginal setae ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 , 8 View FIGURES 8 – 10 ). Metascutum with median pair of setae situated slightly behind anterior margin; campaniform sensilla absent ( Figs. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 4 , 10 View FIGURES 8 – 10 ). Metaepisternum without setae, sculptured with narrowly spacedstriae. Metaepimeron with two setae, sculptured with narrowly spacedstriae. Metapreepisternum developed and with a seta, sculptured with transverse striae. Prosternal ferna weakly connected at middle ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 11 – 13 ); basantra membranous without setae. Mesosternum without sternopleural suture; furca with a spinula ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 11 – 13 ). Metasternal furca strongly developed Yshaped arms extending to mesothorax with a median spinula ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 11 – 13 ). Fore wings with stout setae; first vein with long gap in setal row at middle, two setae on distal half; posterior fringe cilia wavy; clavus with four veinal and no or 1 discal setae. Tarsi 2segmented.
Abdominal terga without ctenidia; terga and sterna without posteromarginal craspeda; each side of terga I to VIII and laterotergites with strong lines of sculpture directed posteriorly ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 11 – 13 ); terga II to VII with three setae (B3–B5 setae) along lateral margin arranged in a straight line ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 11 – 13 ); tergum VIII without comb on posterior margin, but with a few vestigial microtrichia at middle and each side; tergum IX without campaniform sensilla; tergum X without median split ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 11 – 13 ); sterna without discal setae; sternum II with two pairs of posteromarginal setae; sterna III to VII with three pairs of posteromarginal setae. Ovipositor developed.
Male abdominal tergum IX with a pair of hornlike processes (drepanae) on posterior margin ( Figs. 6 View FIGURES 5 – 7 , 15 View FIGURES 14 – 15 ); sterna III to VIII with scattered small glandular areas ( Figs. 7 View FIGURES 5 – 7 , 14 View FIGURES 14 – 15 ).
Etymology. Derived from the Greece trachys, rough, not smooth, and notos, the back, in reference to strong sculpture lines on dorsal surface, and thrips; gender masculine.
