Key to the identification of Asian species of the genus Xylomedes Lesne View in CoL
1. Front with variously developed elevated outgrowths at hind margins of eyes ( Figs 9, 10 View FIGURES 9–11 ). Sides of front and space between outgrowths with dense brushlike erect pubescence. Anterior angles of pronotum without hooked protrusions. Hind margin of anal sternite with dense brush of long golden setae ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 12–16 )........................................... 2.(females)
- Front uniformly flat, without elevated outgrowths ( Figs 17–19 View FIGURES 17–19 ). Erect frontal pubescence fine, sparse, only near epistomal angles and sides of front may be somewhat denser.Anterior pronotal angles with long, downwards directed, hooked protrusions ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 9–11 ). Apical margin of anal sternite without brush of long golden setae.................................5.(males)
2. Frontal outgrowths in form of transverse carinulae narrowly separated at middle ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9–11 ). Body yellowish-brown to brown, 8–9 mm in length................................................................... X. laticornis (Lesne) View in CoL ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–8 )
- Frontal outgrowths developed as simple horns near posteromedian margins of eyes ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 9–11 ). Body reddish- to blackish-brown, length above 11 mm ...................................................................................3.
3. Front with conspicuous depression and short furrow between outgrowths; its surface at middle finely transversely wrinkled, with single fine erect setulae. Elytral apices not prolonged into spines ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 12–16 ).................. X. bidasi n. sp. ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–8 )
- Front between outgrowths uniformly convex, neither depressed nor furrowed; its surface at middle punctured, with tufts of golden erect setae. Elytral apices spiniformly prolonged ( Figs 12–13 View FIGURES 12–16 )............................................4.
4. Recumbent elytral pubescence dense, mostly concealing dorsal surface; basal angles of pronotum, besides long erect setae, with—also rather long—recumbent ones. Spaces between elytral punctures slightly wrinkled or even finely granulated. Distribution: Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey.......................... X. cornifrons cornifrons (Baudi) View in CoL ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1–8 )
- Recumbent elytral pubescence sparse, not concealing dorsal surface; hind margins of pronotum with only long erect setae, recumbent setae occur rarely. Spaces between punctures even, smooth, without granulation. Distribution: Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Oman, Socotra, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Yemen.............. X. cornifrons rufocoronata (Fairm.) View in CoL n. stat. ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1–8 )
5. Apical margin of epistome deeply triangularly emarginated ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 17–19 ).......................... X. bidasi n. sp. ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1–8 )
- Emargination of epistome usually shallowly arcuate ( Figs 18–19 View FIGURES 17–19 )...............................................6.
6. Elytral apices prolonged into spine ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 12–16 ). Tarsi without long erect setae. Colouration blackish-brown. Body length over 13 mm ................................................................................................7.
- Elytral apices not spinose ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 12–16 ). All tarsomeres with long erect setae. Body yellowish-brown to brown. Length at most 9 mm .......................................................................... X. laticornis (Lesne) View in CoL ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1–8 )
7. Recumbent pubescence of elytra dense, mostly concealing dorsal surface; elytral setulae whitish-yellow or grayish-white. Spaces between punctures slightly wrinkled or even finely granulate. Distribution: Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey...................................................................... X. cornifrons cornifrons (Baudi) View in CoL ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1–8 )
- Recumbent elytral pubescence sparse, not concaeling surface; setulae golden or orange. Spaces between punctures even, smooth, not granulate. Distribution: Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Oman, Socotra, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Yemen....................................................................... X. cornifrons rufocoronata (Fairm.) View in CoL n. stat. ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 1–8 )
