Taxonomy. Oryzomys emmonsae Musser et al., 1998 View in CoL , east bank of Rio Xingu, 52 km SSW Altamira, Para, Brazil.

This species is monotypic.

Distribution. Between the Rio Xingu and the Rio Tocantins in Para and Mato Grosso states, Brazil; two records from Rio Teles Pires, Mato Grosso, might represent an undescribed species. View Figure

Descriptive notes. Head-body 128-142 mm, tail 144-160 mm, hindfoot 34—

35 mm. No specific data are available for body weight. Dorsum of Emmons’s Rice Rat is tawny brown, with slightly darker head. Lateral color is ocherous, and venter is white and lightly suffused with gray. Facial vibrissae extend slightly beyond ears. Tail is long and bicolored. Hindfeet have dense ungual tufts, extending beyond claws. Skull is small and delicate. Interorbital margins have smooth supraorbital crests. Capsular process on mandibular ramusis absent. Incisors are opisthodont, and molars are pentalophodont. Chromosomal complement is 2n = 80, FN = 86.

Habitat. Unflooded interfluvial forests in the Amazonian tropical evergreen rainforest.

Activity patterns. Emmons’s Rice Rat might be scansorial and active on substrates aboveground.
