Taxonomy. Brucepattersonius griserufescens Hershkovitz, 1998 View in CoL , Terreirao, 2400 m, Parque Nacional do Caparao, Minas Gerais, Brazil.
This species is monotypic.
Distribution. SE Brazil, restricted to higher elevations of Caparao, Mantiqueira, and Serra dos Orgaos massifs in the states of Minas Gerais, Espitito Santo, and Rio de Janeiro. View Figure
Descriptive notes. Head—body 93-109 mm, tail 97-112 mm, ear 16-19 mm, hindfoot 24-26 mm; weight 20-27 g. The Gray-bellied Brucie is small akodontlike sigmodontine, slighthly smaller than the Short-tailed Brucie ( B. soricinus ). Rostrum is slender, and eyes are minute. Dorsum is uniformly brownish or dark brown from rostrum to tail base; pelage is silky and fluffy, with hairs ¢.10 mm long that possess narrow subterminal ocherous orange band and gray bases entirely concealed beneath long lax fur; sides of trunk and limbs are like back; underparts are predominantly to entirely grayish, variably washed pale ocherous and more or less defined from sides;tail is uniformly brown, and ventral hair and tip and terminal pencil are whitish; ears are brown, partly hidden in fur; digital and facial vibrissae are whitish, and rostral vibrissae reach ear bases when laid back; hands and feet are pale brown to grayish above; and manual claws are 2 mm long, and pedal claws are 4 mm long.
Habitat. Atlantic Forest environments of submontane secondary forest, montane scrub, but primarily undisturbed humid montane forest at elevations of 1800-2400 m.
