Taxonomic notes:— The plant in the plate (as well as its description) belongs to the genus Trigonia (Trigoniaceae) . It can be recognized by the opposite leaves, pentamerous calyx, and segmented stems. According to Lleras (2012), this genus is represented in Rio de Janeiro by 9 species, with the illustration resembling for the most part T. eriosperma .
