Diagnosis sensu Morrow et al. 2013: Encrusting, massive, cup-shaped, fan-shaped, and branching sponges. Megascleres styles, subtylostyles, strongyles, rhabdostyles, or oxea. Spicules typically enclosed by spongin fibers. Reticulate or plumoreticulate choanosomal skeleton, maybe axially compressed. Extra-axial plumose skeleton usually present. Microscleres are sigmata, spirosigmata, toxa, microxeas, raphides, or commata.
