Comments. The subfamily Macrorhynchinae was based by Evdonin (1977) on Macrorhynchus Graff 1882 , (non [ Gmelin, 1801], non Dunker, 1843; see below). This subfamily has since been suppressed by Tessens et al. (2014) on the basis of molecular phylogeny.
According to Kullander (2016), Billberg (1833) introduced a family 'Macrorhynchiides', which Kullander (2016: 106) corrected to Macrorhyncidae Billberg, 1833, based on Macrorhyncus Duméril, 1805 ex La Cépède, 1800 as type genus. As shown below, Macrorhyncus Duméril, 1805 is an objective junior synonym of Macrorhynchus [ Gmelin, 1801] ex La Cépède, 1800. However, according to ICZN (1999: Article 40.1) Macrorhyncidae Billberg, 1833 ( Kullander 2016) can be retained as a formalised name of Billberg's (1833) family. According to Kullander (2016) Macrorhyncidae Billberg, 1833 is a senior synonym of Gempylidae Gill, 1862 , which has to be preserved by the principle of prevailing usage.
Macrorhynchidae Koken, 1887 was originally created in Reptilia to contain Macrorhynchus Dunker, 1843 and related forms. Macrorhynchidae Koken, 1887 is currently considered a senior synonym of Pholidosauridae von Zittel, 1902 , because of supposed synonymy of the type genera. According to ICZN (1999: Article 40.2, Recommendation 40A), Pholidosauridae von Zittel, 1902 (1887) , which prevailed in usage since introduction, has to be retained.
