Olibroporus punctatus Casey, 1890 ( Figs. 1–17 View Figs View Figs View Figs View Fig View Figs )
Olibroporus punctatus Casey 1890: 111 . Type locality: Florida.
Parasemus grouvellei Guillebeau 1894: 300 . Type locality: unknown, probably Neotropical.
New synonymy.
Type material. Olibroporus punctatus holotype, unsexed, “Fla // CASEY \ bequest \ 1925 // TYPE USNM \ 48930 [red label, number handwritten] // Pseudolibrus \ punctatus \ Csy. [handwritten, manuscript name?]” ( USNM). Parasemus grouvellei holotype, female, “ Australia [handwritten, locality almost certainly in error] // Grouvelle [handwritten] // HOLOTYPE \ Parasemus \ grouvellei Guillebeau \ det. M.L. Gimmel 2009 [red label]” ( Fig. 8 View Figs ) ( MNHN), point mounted .
Notes. I previously noted that the type locality of P. grouvellei was probably in error, since this specimen is indistinguishable from those of New World Olibroporus and no similar forms have been seen from Australia, or indeed from anywhere in the Old World ( Gimmel 2013). The Grouvelle collection, from which the holotype is derived, contains specimens from many localities in the New World, including some within the range of O. punctatus . Guillebeau (1894) did indeed recognize the similarity between Parasemus and Olibroporus , as he keyed them out in the same couplet, reproduced here (pp. 280–281):
“4 a. 1 er et 2 e articles des tarses postérieurs soudés, forme ovale. Type: punctatus ex Casey.............. ............................................... Olibroporus Casey 4 b. 1 er et 2 e articles des tarses postérieurs libres; tibias postérieurs obliquement tronqués au sommet; forme subhémisphérique. Type: Grouvellei, n. sp ........................ Parasemus n.g. ”
Despite these remarks, I observe no differences in the disposition of the hind tarsi (nor indeed in any significant characters) based on my examination of specimens of O. punctatus and the type of P. grouvellei . However, Guillebeau apparently relied solely on Casey’ s description for characters of O. punctatus —in fact, he stated explicitly that he did not examine the types of Casey or Sharp ( Guillebeau 1894). Therefore, I consider P. grouvellei a new junior synonym of O. punctatus .
Diagnosis. This species can be distinguished externally from other species of Olibroporus by the evenly globose body shape ( Figs. 1–2 View Figs ) and presence of dense microsculpture (easily visible at 50X) on the elytra ( Fig. 12 View Figs ) in combination with a poorly developed patch of setae centrally on the prosternum ( Fig. 14 View Figs ) and the arcuately rounded shape of the terminal antennomere (best seen in Fig. 3 View Figs ). In other Olibroporus species examined, either the terminal antennomere has a slight emargination on the medial (anterior) border, the elytra do not have visible microsculpture but rather possess spectral iridescence, or the body is flattened. Specimens of all other species examined also possess dense, overlapping setae medially on the disc of the prosternum ( Figs. 24–26 View Figs ). Additionally, the tegmen in O. punctatus is uniquely shaped, with duckbill-shaped, fused parameres with the basal piece more or less evenly tapered toward the apex ( Fig. 4 View Figs ). The penis also possesses paired tufts of spinules laterally before the apex, and a single, shallow, central emargination apically ( Fig. 5 View Figs ). Total length (excluding head) is 1.8–2.6 mm.
Geographical Variation. North of the southern border of the USA, the sutural stria extends more than half the length of the elytron, and the punctures in line with the stria are distinct and extend anteriorly nearly to the level of the scutellar shield. South of the USA border, the sutural stria extends about one-third the length of the elytron, while the punctures in line with the stria are very weak and do not extend anteriorly to the level of the scutellar shield. The Neotropical specimens also tend to be slightly larger on average. However, the aedeagal morphology was not observed to differ between these two variants. The type specimen of P. grouvellei ( Figs. 6–7 View Figs ) possesses the shorter sutural stria, indicating a Neotropical origin.
Distribution. Olibroporus punctatus is an extremely wide-ranging species in the New World ( Fig. 9 View Fig ): from the northeastern USA (New Jersey), west to Louisiana, and south to Florida; in the West Indies from Cuba and the Cayman Islands; from Mexico (Baja California Sur and San Luis Potosí) south to Panama; in South America, from Bolivia and southern Brazil (Santa Catarina and São Paulo). Despite having examined a large number of phalacrid specimens from Venezuela, the Guiana Shield, and the western Amazon Basin, I have seen no specimens of O. punctatus from these regions.
