Betrichia zilbra Mosely 1939 View in CoL ( Fig 2A View FIGURE 2 A – D –E)
Betrichia zilbra Mosely 1939 View in CoL , 231 [type-locality: Brazil, Edo. Santa Catarina, Nova Teutonia; repository of holotype: BMNH, male]; Angrisano 1995, 505 [distribution].
Description. Adult male. Length (from tip of head to wing apices) 2.5–3.0 mm. General color light brown (in alcohol). Head without modifications. Antennae simple with 20 antennomeres; scape slightly flattened, other antennomeres cylindrical. Ocelli 2. Tibial spur formula 1-3-4. Venation of anterior wings distinct, veins reaching wing margin. Posterior wing venation distinct; with long setae on anal margins. Mesoscutellum with transverse suture. Metascutellum pentagonal. Abdomen without visible modifications. Segment VII with mesoventral process.
Male genitalia. Segment VIII shorter dorsally than ventrally; sternum with posteroventral margin truncate with long setae; tergum posterodorsal margin broadly concave. Segment IX internalized in segment VIII, open ventrally. Inferior appendages completely fused to each other, short; in ventral view, tapered to blunt apex; in lateral view narrow over length. Subgenital plate as long as the inferior appendages, wide ventrally; in lateral view, directed posteroventrad with tiny setae at narrow apex. Tergum X membranous, short and rounded in dorsal and lateral views. Phallus tubular basally, with median complex (window and dorsal process); dorsal process shorter than basal portion of phallus; with sclerotized plate and spine-like processes apically.
Remarks. Betrichia zilbra resembles B. occidentalis in the presence of two ocelli in these species and by similarities in the male genitalia. According to Flint (1974), these species can be separated only by the sclerotized plate of the phallus, which bears some small processes in B. zilbra and a pair of long spines in B. occidentalis . This species is reported from the Northeastern Region in Brazil for the first time in Bahia and Sergipe states.
