Frontodendroidopsis pennyi Young , sp. nov.

( Figs. 1–4 View FIGURES 1 – 4 )

Description. Length 11.2–12.5 mm; HW = 2.6–3.0 mm; W = 3.45–3.75 mm; OI = 27.9–28.8 (n = 2). Color of antennae, palpi except inner face of terminal maxillary palpomere, anterior quarter of cranium (excluding labrum), gular region, legs, and venter of thorax and abdomen black; inner face of terminal maxillary palpomere and labrum brownish-testaceous; pronotum, hypomera, scutellum, and elytra orange-brown.

Head: Cranial surface ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ) setose, finely, moderately densely punctate, more coarsely punctate in postocular “neck” region; cranial apparatus across subglabrous frontoclypeal region coarsely, densely punctate. Labrum with anterior margin broadly, shallowly emarginate, mesally. Antennae with antennomeres 1–2 ( Figs. 2–3 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ) densely, moderately coarsely punctate, sparsely clothed with short setae. Cranial apparatus ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ) forming rather flat, subglabrous frontal shelf extending posterad labrum to near emargination of compound eyes and antennal insertions; surface coarsely, densely punctate. Dorsal cranial surface posterad cranial apparatus beset with anteriorly and mesally decumbent, moderately elongate, stout, coppery-orange setae.

Thorax: Pronotum shining, shallowly but densely punctate, vestiture consisting of moderately dense covering of fine, mostly erect, coppery-orange setae; disk somewhat depressed anterolaterally and basomesally, with welldeveloped basal bead. Scutellum punctate, densely covered with fine, retrorsely decumbent, coppery setae. Elytra elongate, fairly flat, covering abdomen, moderately explanate beyond basal one-fifth; densely clothed in vestiture consisting of fine, coppery-orange setae; elytral surface feebly costate or ribbed, costae most visible in humeral area.

Abdomen: Fifth and sixth ventrites apically emarginate. Genitalia of heteromeroid type, with tegmen dorsad penis. Parameres elongate, narrow, narrowly but divergently separated apically, each bearing both lateral, recurved hook and recurved mesal hook. Penis somewhat dorsoventrally flattened, its sides subparallel, tapered subapically, thence slightly swollen to form bluntly rounded apical knob.

Female: Unknown.

Larva: Unknown.

Etymology. The specific epithet, pennyi , is a patronym based on the family name, “Penny.” I offer this epithet in honor of the late Dr. Norman Penny of the California Academy of Sciences. In losing Norm suddenly during the summer of 2016, we too soon lost a most kind and dear colleague and friend. Although Norm was primarily a neuropterist, he was well known to the entire taxonomic entomology community; truly an “entomologist’s entomologist” ( Zuparko and Ratcliffe 2017). It seems but fitting that this holotype bearing his name reside permanently at his California Academy of Sciences “home.”

Distribution. As noted above, the two males of Frontodendroidopsis pennyi were collected during mid- August 2005 while beating vegetation along the South Fork of the Yamu He River, 1.3 km east of Lao Shibali, in northwestern Yunnan Province, China at an elevation of 2250 meters.
