Diagnosis. (after Lorenzen 1978, 1981, 1994; Coomans & Eyualem-Abebe 2006, Fonseca & Bezerra 2014, Zograf et al. 2020, emended and amended)

Sphaerolaimidae . Buccal cavity barrel-shaped; cheilostoma with broad granular shagreen band and usually with a prominent circular crest at posterior edge of the band; gymnostoma narrow; stegostoma short conical or truncate conical.

Type species: Sphaerolaimus hirsutus Bastian, 1865 .
