Megaderma philippinensis Waterhouse, 1843

Waterhouse, G.R. (1843) New species of Megaderma . Proceedings of the Zoological Society London, 1843: 69 [69–70].

Valid name: Megaderma spasma (Linnaeus, 1758)

Referred specimen (marked with type *): ZMB 3064 , body in alcohol, skull not extracted, male adult; Philippines; ex Coll. Cuming, in exchange from Rüppell ( SMF) .

Comment: In the general catalogue ZMB 3064 is annotated with “original specimen from the collections of Cuming”. In 1845 the SMF purchased at least one specimen from Cuming from Manila. It is assumed that Rüppell exchanged a duplicate with ZMB . There is, however, no indication that Waterhouse had seen the ZMB specimen and that it formed part of the syntype series, which are in the BMNH (Andersen & Wroughton 1907: 132, several in BMNH) .
