Rhinophylla pumilio Peters, 1865 View in CoL
Peters, W.C.H. (1865) Über Flederthiere ( Vespertilio soricinus Pallas , Choeronycteris Lichtenst. , Rhinophylla pumilio nov. gen., Artibeus fallax nov. sp., A. concolor nov. sp., Dermanura quadrivittatum nov. sp., Nycteris grandis n. sp.). Monatsberichte der königlich preussischen Akadademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1865: 355 [351–359].
Valid name: Rhinophylla pumilio Peters, 1865
Type species of Rhinophylla Peters 1865 .
Syntypes: ZMB 3060 View Materials (two specimens), bodies in alcohol, skulls extracted (but the male one missing), male and female, adults; Brazil; donated by E. Rüppell (SMF).
Comment: Peters (1865) described Rhinophylla pumilio on the basis of several specimens that were obtained from Rüppell, although measurements were given for one “dry specimen”. There is a series of four other specimens (all in alcohol) with the same data as ZMB 3060, still in SMF . Carter (1966: 237) examined a female in ZMB from “ Brazil ”, although he gave no catalogue number, nor any details of the format of the specimen. Carter & Dolan (1978: 48) considered ZMB 3060 View Materials (a female, donated by Rüppell, in alcohol, with extracted skull) as the holotype. However , there is both a male and a female body (with skulls extracted) in the alcohol jar labelled as ZMB 3060 View Materials .
