Recognition. Large species of the P. pallidiventris-cursitans group; occiput with 1 pair yellowish inclinate verticals; antenna largely yellow, postpedicel darkened on apical part, about 2.5X longer than wide; palpus yellowish, large, oval; mesonotum densely golden grey pollinose, with yellowish bristles, 2 notopleurals, katepisternum with polished black patch occupying about 1/3 of its size; legs almost entirely yellow, only tarsomeres indistinctly annulated; mid tibia with long pointed apical spur; abdomen entirely yellowish brown.
Description. Male. Body length 4.1–4.4 mm; wing length 4.7–5.0 mm. Head black. Occiput densely grey pollinose; with 1 pair of long, yellowish, inclinate verticals; upper part of occiput with numerous moderately long, yellowish bristly hairs becoming longer and whitish on lower part. Ocellar tubercle greyish pollinose, with long (as long as verticals) anterior and minute posterior setae. Frons narrow, mostly parallel-sided, somewhat broadened before ocellar tubercle, densely greyish pollinose. Face narrow, densely silvery pollinose, slightly widening below; clypeus silvery pollinose. Antenna largely yellow, only postpedicel darkened apically (sometimes almost entirely yellow); postpedicel conical, about 2.5X longer than wide; stylus black, short pubescent, nearly 3X longer than postpedicel. Proboscis dark brown, long, 2/3 as long as head is high. Palpus yellowish, rather large, oval, whitish pubescent, apically with 2–3 whitish very long bristly hairs.
Thorax with mesonotum densely golden grey dusted; pleura densely silvery grey pollinose; with yellowish bristles; katepisternum (= sternopleuron) with polished black patch occupying about 1/3 of its size. Postpronotal lobe with 1 long and several short setae. Mesonotum with 2 long notopleurals, 2 postalars (1 longer) and 4 scutellars (apical pair long, cruciate, lateral pair short); acrostichals moderately long, arranged in 2 almost regular rows; dorsocentrals irregularly 2–3-serial, somewhat longer than acrostichals, 2 prescutellar pairs long; additionally, some setulae present just behind postpronotal lobe, on notopleuron and supra-alar face.
Legs almost entirely yellow, only tarsomeres 2–5 of all legs indistinctly annulated (darker on tarsomeres 3–5). Fore femur strongly thickened, with anteroventral and posteroventral rows of long bristly hairs becoming longer towards base. Fore tibia slightly thickened, with long pale hairs ventrally and some short darkened bristly hairs dorsally. Fore basitarsus with long hairs ventrally, which as long as subapical hairs on fore tibia. Mid femur slightly stouter than fore femur, with double row of short black spines ventrally and row of moderately long posteroventral bristles. Mid tibia slender, with row of black ventral spinules; apical spur long, pointed, black apically. Hind legs long and slender, covered with only short pale hairs. Tarsi of all legs unmodified.
Wing slightly yellowish, with yellowish veins. Costal bristle yellowish, moderately long. Veins R4+5 and M1+2 somewhat convergent near wing margin, M1+2 slightly bowed on apical part; CuA2 slightly recurrent. Crossveins mcu and r-m distinctly separated. Calypter yellow, with yellow setae. Halter yellow.
Abdomen yellowish brown, shining, anterior two tergites with small lateral patches of greyish pollinosity; covered with numerous long pale yellow hairs; segment 8 and sternite 7 black, sternite 8 with longer posteromarginal setae. Terminalia ( Figs 11–13 View FIGURES 11 – 13 ) moderately large, subglobular, shining black. Right cercus ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 11 – 13 ) digitiform, with rounded apex, not extending beyond apex of left epandrial lamella, covered with short ordinary setae; right cercus digitiform, nearly as long as but slightly broader than right cercus, with small notch apically, covered with short ordinary setae. Right epandrial lamella ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 11 – 13 ) elongate oval (ventral view), with tuft of several very long subapical setae; right surstylus short, subtriangular, with some short ordinary setae. Left epandrial lamella ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 11 – 13 ) rather elongate oval, rounded apically, with uniformly smoothed lower margin, bearing numerous very long, pale yellow, curved setae along lower margin and short, ordinary setae along upper margin on subapical part.
Female. Resembling male but acrostichals and dorsocentrals slightly shorter; fore tibia and fore basitarsus without long pale hairs ventrally; abdomen often paler, with shorter hairs and bristles; segments 7–8 and cercus black, densely greyish pollinose; cercus long, slender, with pale hairs.
Etymology. The name of the new species refers to the area of its origin, Nature Reserve “Kamyshanova Polyana”.
Distribution. PALAEARCTIC: Russia (Krasnodarskiy Territory). Known only from Nature Reserve “Kamyshanova Polyana” (44°10'7"N, 40°2'43"E), altitude 900–1200 m.
Remarks. The new species is closely related to P. vockerothi Chvála, 1981 known from Spain and North Africa ( Chvála 2013). Platypalpus kamyshanovensis sp. nov. differs from P. vockerothi by yellowish palpus (yellowish brown in P. vockerothi ); almost entirely yellow postpedicel (largely black in P. vockerothi ); somewhat longer postpedicel; darker legs and details of the male terminalia.
