Description. Forewings 2.0 times longer than wide, length: male 3.9–4.2 mm (mean = 4.0, n= 3), female 4.3–4.6 mm. Colour stramineous to light brown. Male with last two abdominal segments bright red, genitalia dark grey; females with abdomen light brown, tergites with hind margins orange. Forewings brown; the anterior halves of base and apex colourless; colour of veins matching forewing colour, but all margins orange. Hindwings including veins fuscous, margins orange. Rostrum reaching end of abdomen; antennae elongated. Forewings with Sc+R fork in basal third; Ms1 branched distad of its middle, bases of Ms1 and Cu1 touching. Male genitalia with pygofer narrow; anal segment with 2 short lateral processes. Genital styles elongated; proximal dorsal process short and narrow; base of distal dorsal process slightly produced. Aedeagus with two slender dorsal processes arising from stem near junction with apical part; apical part spatulate, the apical margin obliquely truncate, leaving the left side extended. In one paratype male apical part of aedeagus more elongated than shown for the holotype in Figure 143o.

Etymology. The species name is a Latin adjective (regius, -a, -um = royal).

Type material. Holotype ♂ (forewing 4.2 mm, body 2.1 mm), EAST MALAYSIA: SABAH; labels: 1) N. BORNEO / Mt. Kinabalu 2) Bembangan Trail./ 18 III 1964 3) Royal Soc. Exped. / coll. S. Kueh / B.M. 1964-250 ( BMNH) . Paratypes. Same data as holotype, 2 ♂ (fw. 3.9, 4.0), 2 ♀ (fw. 4.3, 4.6) ( BMNH) .

Distribution. Borneo (Sabah).

Diagnosis. Alara regia can be easily recognized by the light marks at the base and tip of the forewings. In structure it comes closest to Alara cornigera sp. nov. from West Malaysia.
