Redescription. Forewings 2.2 times longer than wide, length: male 3.4–3.9 mm (mean = 3.6, n= 19), female 3.3– 4.0 mm (mean = 3.8, n= 13). Colour reddish brown above; stramineous underneath, but frons, subantennal processes, and margins of facial carinae also reddish brown; antennae and fore tarsi red; abdomen including genitalia bright red in male, in female (and in one male specimen but not the holotype) abdominal tergites red, sternites and genitalia brown. Forewings and hindwings infuscated; veins and stridulation area of hindwings bright red. Rostrum slightly surpassing hindcoxae. Forewings with Sc+R fork just distad of basal third; Ms1 branched just distad of its basal quarter; a crossvein connecting bases of Ms1 and Cu1; a triangle at base of Ms1. Hindwings only about half as wide as forewings; stridulation area large. Male genitalia with pygofer narrow. Genital styles oval; proximal dorsal process short, slender; base of distal dorsal process slightly swollen, close to proximal process. Aedeagus short; apical part with two flat, terminal lobes, twisted by about 45°.
Etymology. The species name is a Latin adjective (fumatus, -a, -um = smoke coloured).
Type material. Holotype ♂ (forewing 3.9 mm, body 2.0 mm), INDONESIA: JAVA; labels: 1) E. JACOBSON/ Goenoeng/ Oengaran Java/ Dec. 1909 2) Collectio/ Dr. L. Note. The type locality is Gunung Ungaran (= Goenoeng Oengaran) in Central Java .

Distribution. Java.
Diagnosis. Alara fumata (Melichar) resembles A. alboapicalis Zelazny from the Philippines in forewing venation and structure of the hindwings. It can be easily distinguished, however, from that species by the uniformly coloured forewings.
