Jacobaea othonnae subsp. othonnae View in CoL
Synonym:— Senecio rariflorus Koch (1843: 47) .
Type:— GEORGIA. Tschaweusgebiet , C. Koch ( P03729654 , lectotype designated here) ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ) .
Diagnosis:—Involucres and the synflorescence glabrous.
Distribution of the type subspecies extends from northern Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, eastern Serbia, Kosovo, Bulgaria and north-east Greece (with exception of parts of Mt. Athos), through the European part of Turkey and north-east Anatolia up to the Caucasus in the Russian Federation and western Georgia.
The synonymised name Senecio rariflorus C. Koch was established on the basis of material from “Ossia” – South Ossetia, Caucasus. “ Maxime accredit ad S. othonnae M.B., sed huic specie sunt Pinnae sessiles, Calathidia sub 8-flora; Anthodium sub-8-phyllum et ligulae latae, apice dentate. In Ossia [Ossetia] frequenter ”. In the detailed description also its glabrosity “ glaberrimus ” is mentioned. In an account of his journeys, Koch (1843) mentioned that he collected this species from two sites: one ( Koch 1843: 64) from Ossetia, locality Tapan (Tagiani) not far from Dschawi (Dzau in Ossetian, Dzhava or today Java in Georgian), and the other ( Koch 1843: 136) from the locality Glola (today out of the western border of South Ossetia); see also Lack (1978). Ledebour (1845: 637) indicates the presence of Koch’s specimens in Berlin “ in herb. reg. berol. ”, but there are no specimens by Koch preserved in Berlin today. Most of his specimens kept in Berlin were destroyed during the World War II ( Edmondson & Lack 1977: 321). There are two Koch’s specimens preserved in Paris. One with the label “ Russisch – Armenien ” (P03729657, http://mediaphoto. mnhn.fr/media/1441347947308ClHfLzHVvGpNeQGp), with Koch’s original handwriting and the other (P03729654, https://mediaphoto.mnhn.fr/media/16130588644386xngNRm4KlRdTHFe) labelled as “Tschaweusgebiet” with a nonoriginal, transcribed label. The latter specimen was selected as a lectotype because of the good conformity with the protologue.
