Smittium elongatum Lichtw, Mycologia View in CoL 64: 191. 1972. (Figs 47–48)
Specimens examined: — COLOMBIA. SANTANDER: Berlin; Río Arenales, prepared from Chironomidae larvae, D. Baron, COL17–Tr51; Berlin; Quebrada El Cardal, prepared from Chironomidae larvae, D. Baron, COL16–Tr52.
Comments: — Smittium elongatum has been reported from the USA, Colorado ( Lichtwardt 1972) and Idaho ( Bench & White 2012), also from Australia (Lichtwardt & Williams 1990) and Italy (Valle et al. 2014). Our specimens match the original description provided by Lichtwardt (1972). Colombian specimens presented a holdfast about 6.5
μm diameter, and elongated or nearly cylindrical trichospores measuring 25–33 × 3.5–5 μm, with a collar 2.5–4.1 μm length, with one long and coiled appendage. Zygospores not observed.
FIGURES 47–48. Smittium elongatum from Chironomidae . 47. Elongated or nearly cylindrical trichospore, with a short collar. 48. Holdfast detail (arrow). Scale bar for Fig. 43 View FIGURES 43–46 = 50 μm; for Figs 44 View FIGURES 43–46 –48 = 25 μm.
