Description. Snout rounded, prominent. Rostral broad, three-quarters the width of the head, truncated posteriorly; frontal subtrapezoidal; supraocular oblique, its lateral apex between nasal and preocular (rarely between preocular and ocular); eye usually behind the posterior border of the preocular; nasal suture arising from the first labial; SIP usually T-X (P, P, O, O), sometimes II-O, very rarely I-P; MSR 26 to 30, reduction A/B +2 to 2, B/C 2 to 6; MD 323–505 (mean 379.1, n = 169); vertebrae 185–225 (mean 201.2, n = 82); MD/V ratio 1.67–2.05 (mean 1.87, n = 82); L/D ratio 21–47 (mean 31.8, n = 114). Blackish, each scale with yellow spots at base and apex, pigmentation gradually reduced laterally and sometimes with the midventral zone unpigmented or with a series of irregular pale patches. MCZ 30037 from Ujiji is black above and blotched below. Largest specimen (IRSNB 3206A—Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo) has a total length of 640 mm.
Distribution. Savannas of West Africa, east to Ethiopia, south to Angola, the Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and northern Tanzania, 0–2600 m ( Figs. 11, 13 & 14).
