Trachysphyrus blanchardi (Townes and Townes)

Unlike most other species in its group, T. blanchardi inhabits humid subtropical woodlands and forest below 1500 m altitude in Argentina, Uruguay, and Brasil. I have collected it at Villa Nougués in the Sierra de San Javier just west of Tucumán city in subtropical wet forest under the shade of huge myrtacean and lauracean trees with their distinctive epiphytic flora of bromeliads, orchids, and arboreal cacti. It has been reared several times from the large, tough cocoons of Megalopyge spp. ( Lepidoptera , Megalopygidae ).
