Etymology:—Latin “ huapi ”, referring to a Chinese local name “huapi ”, indicating the bolete has a sticky pileal surface.
Diagnosis:—Characterized by a yellowish white to grayish yellow pileus when young, brown to dark brown when old, surface of pores and stipe usually beaded with white latex when young, a stipe without obvious granules, a pileipellis as an ixocutis, and an association with two-needled pines including P. caribaea Morelet , P. massoniana Lamb. and P. yunnanensis Franch.
Holotype:— CHINA. Fujian Province: Zhangping County, Xinqiao Town, Chengkou Village , elev. 350 m, 25 July 2013, N. K. Zeng 1281 ( FHMU 837 ). GenBank numbers 28 S: MH208351 , ITS: MH208357 , TEF-1: MH208364 .
Description:— Basidiomata small to medium-sized. Pileus 2–7 cm in diameter, subhemispherical to convex when young, then applanate, sometimes slightly depressed in the centre when old; margin involute, upturned when old; surface sticky, yellowish white (1A2) to grayish yellow (2B5) when young, brown (6C6), dark brown (6F8), occasionally yellowish white (1A2) when mature; context 0.5–0.9 cm thick in the center of the pileus, yellowish white (1A2) to grayish yellow (1B4), unchanging in color when injured. Hymenophore poroid, nearly adnate to slightly decurrent; pores angular, compound, 0.5–3 mm in diameter, sulphur yellow (1A5), unchanging in color when injured, sometimes beaded with white latex when young; tubes 0.1–0.6 cm long, canary yellow (2B7) to pastel yellow (2A4), unchanging in color when injured. Stipe 2.5–6 × 0.6–1.1 cm, central, sometimes eccentric, subcylindrical, solid, hollow when old; surface pale yellow (1A3), covered with sulphur yellow (1A5), brown (6D6) to reddish brown (6E8) scales, usually beaded with white latex when young; context yellowish white (1A2), unchanging in color when injured; annulus absent; basal mycelium white (1A1). Odor indistinct.
Basidia 13–34 × 4–7 μm, clavate, thin-walled, 4-spored; sterigmata 2–3 μm long; colorless to yellowish brown in KOH. Basidiospores [460/23/8] (5–)6.5–9(–10) × 3–4(–5) μm, Q=(1.60–)2–2.71(–3.00), Qm=2.34 ± 0.27, subfusiform to ellipsoid, slightly thick-walled (up to 0.5 μm), light yellow in KOH, smooth. Hymenophoral trama composed of gelatinous divergent hyphae 4–7 μm wide, colorless in KOH. Cheilocystidia 45–60 × 7–9 μm, abundant, subclavate, sometimes apex obtuse, slightly thick-walled (up to 1 μm), usually with dark brown contents, without encrustations. Pleurocystidia 27–50 × 4–8 μm, abundant, subclavate, occasionally with obtuse apex, slightly thick-walled (up to 1 μm), usually with dark brown contents, without encrustations. Pileipellis an ixocutis about 140 μm in thickness, embedded in a gelatinized matrix, composed of slightly interwoven, occasionally branched, thin-walled hyphae 2–4 μm diam; non-gelatinized filamentous hyphae fuchsia to light yellow in KOH, gelatinous hyphae colorless in KOH. Pileal trama composed of thin- to slightly thick-walled (up to 0.5 μm) hyphae, colorless in KOH, 4–7 μm diam. Stipitipellis a hymeniderm about 160 μm in thickness, composed of thin-walled emergent hyphae with subclavate, subfusiform or subcylindrical terminal cells (23–55 × 4–8 μm), colorless, pale yellowish brown to yellowish brown in KOH, and with scattered clavate, four-spored basidia. Stipe trama composed of longitudinally arranged, parallel hyphae 3–7.5 μm diam, cylindrical, thin- to slightly thick-walled (up to 0.5 μm), colorless in KOH. Clamp connections absent in all tissues.
Habitat:—Gregarious on the ground in forests of P. caribaea , P. yunnanensis or P. massoniana .
Known distribution:—Southwestern, southeastern, and southern China.
