status

61. Hercostomus appendiculatus (Loew, 1859) (Dolichopodinae) View in CoL

( Figs 3O View FIGURE 3 , 7G View FIGURE 7 )

Number of specimens recorded. 263.

Distribution. Southwestern European distribution ( Spain, Portugal, France); also North Africa. Portugal: 10 provinces (see also Naglis & Barták 2015).

Ecology. Though being collected in all macrohabitat categories except for mountainous biotopes, this species seems to prefer agricultural land, marshlands and banks of water bodies. It has been collected abundantly in Portugal at seepages in mixed forest and on pebbly river banks. This species is not recorded from northwestern Europe.

Rarity (%). 29.9 (common).

Activity period. April–July.

Remarks. Czech specimens identified as H. appendiculatus ( Olejnicek & Barták 2000) proved to belong to Poecilobothrus , which renders its occurrence in the Czech Republic erroneous.
