(Figs. 22, 61, 97, 119, 165, 192, 214–215, 263)
Stenotarsus lemniscatus Gorham, 1890: 139 . Strohecker 1953: 53; Shockley et al. 2009a: 82; Roubik & Skelley 2001: 255.
Diagnosis. This species is distinguished from other species of the region by the following combination of characters: body uniformly ferruginous-brown (Fig. 22), long antennae, 0.39–0.50X as long as body ( Fig. 61 View FIGURES 54 – 71 ), pronotum with base emarginate near scutellum ( Fig. 97 View FIGURES 90 – 104 ), second tarsomere of all legs markedly narrow, not widened distally, and the shape of median lobe, which is strongly widened apically, in lateral view ( Figs. 214–215 View FIGURES 200 – 223 ).
Description of males. Body 3.7–4.6 mm long, markedly convex (Fig. 22), 1.68–1.70X as long as wide, 2.8X as long as high. Uniformly dark brown except last five antennomeres which are black. Densely covered with long, suberect, golden setae.
Head: Clypeus transverse 1.9–2.0X wider than long. Terminal labial palpomere narrow, acuminate, narrowly truncate apically. Interocular distance 0.58–0.61X as wide as head. Antenna long and slender ( Fig. 61 View FIGURES 54 – 71 ), 0.45–0.50X as long as body; scape 1.7X as long as wide, 2X longer than pedicel; pedicel 1.1X longer than wide; third antennomere 1.4X as long as wide, 1.1X as long as pedicel; fourth 1.5X as long as wide, 1.3X as long as pedicel; fifth 2X as long as wide, 1.6X as long as pedicel; sixth 1.8X as long as wide, 1.7X as long as pedicel; seventh 1.6X as long as wide, 1.8X as long as pedicel; eighth 1.4X as long as wide, 1.6X longer than pedicel; antennal club 0.4X as long as total antennal length, with segments almost symmetrical; ninth antennomere widened apically, 1.4X as long as wide, 2X as long as pedicel; tenth widened apically, 1.1X as long as wide, 1.8X as long as pedicel; terminal antennomere slightly asymmetrical, widest near midlength, with a small protuberance on lateral margin at midlength, 1.8X as long as wide, 3.2X as long as pedicel.
Prothorax: Pronotum ( Fig. 97 View FIGURES 90 – 104 ) widest at base; widely transverse, 2.25–2.33X wider than long, 2.15X wider at base than at front angles, 2.25–2.35X wider than head. Sides almost continuously rounded to front angles. Front angles produced, right-angled, narrowly rounded at tip. Hind angles right-angled to slightly acute. Anterior margin narrow, almost flat. Lateral margins moderately raised, wide, narrowing posteriorly; width of margin at base 1/3 of the distance between basal pore and hind angle; area between marginal line and pronotal edge flat to weakly concave. Disc moderately convex, finely and closely punctate. Longitudinal sulci rather feeble, short, weakly curved. Basal pores small, slightly elongate and oblique. Basal sulcus not impressed. Pronotal base lobed medially but emarginate near scutellum. Prosternal process narrow at base, weakly widened posteriorly; 0.75X as wide as longitudinal procoxal diameter apically.
Pterothorax: Scutellum triangular, small, 1.5–1.65X wider than long, 0.15X as wide as pronotum. Elytra 2.5– 3.0 mm long, 1.12–1.14X longer than wide, 3.4–3.7X longer and 1.35X wider than pronotum; ovoid, widest near basal third, then roundly converging to the somewhat acuminate apex; rather sparsely punctate with foveolate punctures moderately large, shallow, separated by 2–5 diameters, sparser and shallower apically. Humerus moderately prominent. Epipleuron at base 0.8X as wide as intercoxal process of metaventrite. Mesoventrite deeply excavated in front; bearing small setose pores laterally; mesoventral process as wide as longitudinal coxal diameter, without medial carinae. Metaventrite moderately convex, without modifications near the anterior margin; with pair of small setose pores of approximately same diameter posterior to each mesocoxa. Metepisternum with small setose pore.
Legs: moderately long and slender ( Fig. 165 View FIGURES 158 – 173 ). Trochanters simple. Meso- and metafemora somewhat stout, slightly widened at midlength, unarmed; metafemur as long as mesofemur, bearing moderately long decumbent setae. Meso- and metatibiae slender; metatibia scarcely shorter than metafemur, 0.33–0.35X as long as elytra; gradually widened apically, linear to slightly curved, medial margin unarmed. Metatarsus 0.60–0.65X as long as metatibia; second tarsomere produced and narrow, as wide or narrower apically as fourth tarsomere at midlength.
Abdomen: ventrite I slightly longer than metaventrite and as long as ventrites II–V combined, with sparse large foveolate punctation, without protuberances. Ventrite V markedly longer than IV, with apex truncate. Ventrite VI rounded apically. Tergite VIII widely truncate. Median lobe small and stout, curved, widened apically, in ventral ( Fig. 215 View FIGURES 200 – 223 ) and lateral views ( Fig. 214 View FIGURES 200 – 223 ). Tegmen with moderately large submembranous tegminal plate.
Description of females. Body 4.10–4.75 mm long, 1.60–1.65X as long as wide, 2.60–2.67X as long as high. Antenna 0.39–0.45X as long as body. Pronotum 2.28–2.41X wider than long, 2.0–2.2X wider at base than at front angles, 2.3–2.5X wider than head. Elytra 2.80–3.15 mm, 1.04–1.12X longer than wide, 3.70–3.95X longer and 1.42–1.49X wider than pronotum. Metatibia 0.28–0.33X as long as elytra. Metatarsus 0.53–0.58X as long as metatibia. Abdomen with tergite VIII widely truncate ( Fig. 192 View FIGURES 186 – 195 ). Ovipositor with proctiger acuminate, coxites wide, without styli.
Sexual dimorphism. Females have considerably shorter antennae than males (0.39–0.45X and 0.45–0.50X as long as body, respectively).
Variation. The specimens from Los Tuxtlas in Veracruz, have very short antennae: 0.39X as long as body in females, and 0.45X in one male.
