Odopoea degiacomii Distant, 1912 View in CoL
Odopoea degiacomii Distant, 1912: 644 View in CoL (Santos, Brazil).
REMARKS. The holotype of Odopoea degiacomii Distant, 1912 was reported as originating in Santos, Brazil (Distant 1912). This specimen is clearly mislabeled as to where it was collected since the genus Odopoea Stål, 1861 is restricted to the central, insular Caribbean basin (Hispaniola and Jamaica) with related genera in Central America and the Andes in northwestern Argentina, southwestern Bolivia, and southeastern Peru ( Sanborn 2019a; 2020a; 2020c). Distant (1912) also compares O. degiacomii to a Haitian species, Odopoea strigipennis ( Walker, 1858a) , in the description so classification in one of the related genera is impossible. Review of the male genitalia shows that O. degiacomii exhibits the morphology of Odopoea rather than the genera erected from the genus ( Sanborn 2020c). Therefore, Odopoea degiacomii is removed from the Brazilian cicada fauna with the type location most likely on Hispaniola rather than in Brazil.
DISTRIBUTION. Other than the incorrect reporting of the type locality, the species has been recorded only from Hispaniola , with records from both the Dominican Republic and Haiti ( Metcalf 1963a; Sanborn 2013).
