Genus Makrostyles Jaschhof View in CoL gen. nov.
Type species, terrifica sp. nov., here designated.
The genus Makrostyles is here established to classify another species from Costa Rica with the Johnsonomyia -like general appearance combined with presence of highly unusual male genitalia.
Diagnosis. Most notably, the gonostylus of Makrostyles is equipped with an excessively large apical tooth, which is strongly bent in the proximal half and slightly angled subapically (↓, Fig. 17A View FIGURE 17 A – C ). The teeth of both gonostyli cross each other at exactly the point of the subapical angle. The copulatory organ is peculiar for its elaborate structure, including a convex, subtrapezoid ventral shield and a dorsal pair of finger-like, largely separated, microtrichose processes arising from a common sclerotized base (↓, Fig. 17A View FIGURE 17 A – C ). The ejaculatory apodeme is not traceable as a discrete structure, but might be incorporated in the copulatory organ. The massive gonocoxae, which are much broader than long, have greatly developed, protruding medial bridges and unusually small dorsal apodemes ( Fig. 17A View FIGURE 17 A – C ). Females of Makrostyles are unknown.
Etymology. The generic name is composed of the Greek words makros, for large, and stylos, for style, meaning “with large gonostyli”. Gender of the name is feminine.
