Gynapteromyia novaezealandiae Jaschhof View in CoL sp. nov.
Fig. 7A–C View FIGURE 7 A – C
Diagnosis. This is the only species of Gynapteromyia with completely unsetose wing membrane. Male genitalic characters specific to G. novaezealandiae are as follows (Fig. A). The tegmen apex, which is broader than in most of the congeneric species, has slightly protruding corners (↓); the angulated protrusions of the medial gonocoxal bridges bear sparse ordinary setae and microtrichia (↓); the ventral gonocoxal emargination is shorter than usual; and the gonostylus is parallel-sided, very slightly bent inwards apically (↓), and equipped with a blunt-ended, normal-sized tooth. Females are unknown.
Other male characters. Body length 1.2–1.3 mm. Head. Genal setae 6. Eye bridge without ommatidia dorsally. Scape with 2–3 setae. Neck of fourth flagellomere (Fig. C) 1.5 times longer than node; node with sparse crenulate whorl medially, microtrichia only basally. Palpus (Fig. B) clearly shorter than head height, 3 segments, first and second segments with hair-shaped translucent sensilla, apical segment unsetose. Wing length / width 3.0. Narrow portion of wing base conspicuously long. Vein btv without setae. CuA without setae, fading out before wing margin. Genitalia (Fig. A). Gonocoxae: ventral bridge without setae medially and basally; anterior processes of apodemes about as long as distance separating them. Gonostylus twice as long as wide. Parameral apodemes small.
Etymology. The species epithet refers to occurrence of this species in New Zealand.
Type material. Holotype. Male, New Zealand, South Island, Buller, Lake Rotoroa, mixed podocarp / southern beech forest, 540 m, 27 Dec. 2000, Malaise trap (#4), Department of Conservation St. Arnaud (in NZAC). Paratype. Male, same data as the holotype (in NZAC).
