Note: —Some specimens from KwaZulu-Natal are stronger than R. probabilis . They correspond with the North American R. pascuus .
Primocane angular, furrowed, diam. 4–5 mm, slightly hairy, with sessile glands; prickles 8–10 per 5 cm from 1–3 mm base abruptly attenuate, compressed, straight or slightly declining, ± 7 mm long; stipules linear-lanceolate, 15 mm long. Leaves ( Fig. 22B View FIGURE 22 ) 3-foliolate or pedate 5-foliolate, adaxially rather densely hairy, abaxially greyish, tomentose and soft hairy; serrature with triangular straight short pointed teeth; petiole 5–7 cm, with long stellate hairs and 10–15 curved strong prickles; central leaflet 57–70 mm long, broad elliptic, with rounded or subcordate base, rather abruptly attenuate into short tip, sometimes lobate, width–length index 0.62–0.80, length of petiolule 27–43% of length of leaflet. Flowering branch ( Fig. 22C View FIGURE 22 ) short hairy with slightly to strongly curved prickles. Inflorescence ( Fig. 22D View FIGURE 22 ) axillary or subracemose, with 3–5 flowers on ascending peduncles; pedicels ascendant, 8–21 mm long, grey tomentose and hairy, with 2–5 pricklets, without stipitate glands. Flowers: sepals grey, reflexed, short pointed; petals white, obovate; stamens spreading, somewhat longer than styles; anthers glabrous; ovaries glabrous.
Ecology: —Grasslands
Distribution in South Africa: —At some localities in southwestern KwaZulu-Natal.
