Note: —This species is characterized by long dark red bristles both on the primocane and in the inflorescence. It cannot be confused with any other taxon in the region. For a full description and the difference with R. ellipticus Smith (1819 : nr. 16), which was found near Durban, see Sochor (2019).
Distribution in South Africa: — Rubus phoenicolasius grows in the region only around Hogsback, Eastern Cape.
Specimen:— SOUTH AFRICA. Eastern Cape: Amatole Mountains near Hogsback, along Hogsback Pass , 9 November 1984, Phillipson 937 ( PRE) .
