Ophion variegatus Rudow, 1883

Ophion variegatus Rudow, 1883: 59‒60 (as O. variegatum ). Neotype female collected in France in MNHN, examined.

Material examined: IRAN: 2♀♀, Mazandaran province, Kelardasht, Rudbarak, Vandarbon , 2455 m. a. s. 23 May 2003, Gil. / Nem. leg. ( HMIM) .

Remarks: Recently reinstated as a valid taxon (Johansson & Cederberg 2019) this species is known to occur over most of Europe. It shall be noted that the Ophion obscuratus aggregate, to which O. variegatus belongs, is in need of a more thorough revision involving molecular methods. The species was only recently properly defined (Johansson & Cederberg 2019) and any references in literature preceding that date of publication is likely to refer to any closely related and similar species in the Ophion obscuratus aggregate.
