Dendrobium cumulatum Lindl., Gard. Chron. 1855: 756, 1855 View in CoL

Homotypic synonym: Callista cumulata (Lindl.) Kuntze, Revis. Gen . Pl. 2: 654, 1891.

Heterotypic synonyms: Dendrobium rhodocentrum Rchb. f., Gard. Chron. 1872: 426, 1872. Callista rhodocentra (Rchb.f.) Kuntze, Revis. Gen . Pl. 2: 655, 1891. Eurycaulis rhodocentrum (Rchb.f.) M.A.Clem., Telopea 10 (1): 287, 2003. Type:—‘INDIA’ (probably Myanmar). Imp. Buller s.n. (holotype: W).

Specimens examined:—? MYANMAR. Type. UPPER MYANMAR. Without collector s.n. (not located, possibly CAL), fide King & Pantling (1898: 46). MON. Mawlamyine District: Benson s.n. (not located), fide Hooker (1868: t. 5703); same loc., Parish 200 ( K, W). TANINTHARYI. Dawei District : Berkeley s.n. ( K); same loc., 640−700 m, Oct 1961, Keenan et al. 1620 ( E). WITHOUT LOCALITY. Cult. material ( W). Reported from Kachin State, Sagaing Region, Chin State and Mandalay Region by Kress et al. (2003: 73), but we have not seen material from these areas .

Distribution:— The eastern Himalayas, northeastern India, Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina and possibly Borneo.

Notes:— We think that D. rhodocentrum cannot be kept separate from D. cumulatum , the former defined merely by a shorter mentum and a more obscure tooth on the lip claw, but also in D. cumulatum from Sikkim, Bhutan and Darjeeling the mentum is short ( Pearce & Cribb 2002: 421). The tooth on the lip claw is also found in both species, although less prominent in specimens originally referred to D. rhodocentrum . A photograph identified as D. linguella Rchb. f. in Nyan Tun (2014: 212) might be referable to this species.
