( Figs. 35 View FIGURE 35 A–H, 55J–L)

Diagnostic remarks. A medium size green katydid ( Figs. 35G, H View FIGURE 35 ), similar in its general characteristics to P. guytonae but easily identifiable by the unique, deeply branched structure of the male cercus ( Figs. 35A, B View FIGURE 35 ) and strongly elongated posterior lobes of the subgenital plate ( Fig. 35C View FIGURE 35 ). The stridulatory file is 1.7 mm long, with 97–109 teeth ( Fig. 35D View FIGURE 35 ). The ovipositor in P. abdita is more slender and its upper valvula ends in a sharp point ( Fig. 35F View FIGURE 35 ). The call of this species lacks the frequency modulation seen in P. guytonae .

Bioacoustics. The call of P. abdita is a series of syllables in groups of 2–4; mean syllable duration is 0.0033 s (SD=0.002105, n=20); the peak frequency varies from 18.2 to 24.6 kHz but exhibits no consistent incremental changes that are seen in P. guytonae ( Fig. 55 View FIGURE 55 J–L).

Distribution and natural history. P. abdita was recently described from Central Tanzania (Udzungwa Mountains National Park and Kihansi forest reserve) but its presence in Gorongosa indicates a much wider distribution. In Gorongosa this species is found in dense riparian forests and adults have only been seen at the end of the rainy season, in March and April.

Measurements (1 male, 2 females). body w/wings: male 41.3, female 40–41 (40.5.7); body w/o wings: male 20.4, female 19–20 (19.5.7); pronotum: male 4.9, female 5; tegmen: male 32.6, female 31–33 (321.4); hind femur: male 20.7, female 20–24 (222.8); ovipositor: 9 mm.
