gen. nov.

Cendiunopsis , gen. nov.

Type species: Cendiunopsis garnieri , sp. nov.

Etymology. From Cendiuna Galileo & Martins, 1991 , Tupi generic name (which means: cendi, light and una, beetle) and Greek: όψίς, aspect (feminine gender).

Description. Female. Medium size. Body elongate, subcylindrical, robust. Head hypognathous, not wider than prothoracic apex, not notably elongate and without distinct constriction behind eyes; frons slightly convex, unarmed; eyes not divided, with area of connection between lobes about as wide as half of widest area of upper eye lobe; distance between upper eye lobes about twice width of an upper eye lobe; lower eye lobes about as long as genal length. Antennal tubercles distant each other, not notably elevate. Antenna notably short, not reaching middle of elytra, 11-segmented; scape slender, cylindrical, slightly, gradually widened toward apex, without apical cicatrix; pedicel much shorter than scape; antennomere III cylindrical, longer than scape, about as long as IV–VI together, not widened, without dense long setae, without spine at apex; antennomeres IV–XI together, gradually, uniformly narrowed toward apex of antenna, without long, dense setae; antennomere XI not modified. Prothorax with basal gibbosity notably developed. Pronotum with three gibbosities moderately well-marked; pubescent. Elytra parallel-sided, pubescent; humeral carina nearly absent (only indicated by abrupt inclination of elytra at basal half, but not forming distinct keel); apex individually rounded; epipleura without fringe of long setae on basal area. Tarsal claws bifid, with inner tooth as long as outer tooth.

Remarks. The general appearance of Cendiunopsis gen. nov. is similar to that of Canarana Martins & Galileo, 1992 due to the prothoracic shape, but differs as follows: antennae not surpassing middle of elytra; elytra without distinct humeral carina; elytral apex individually rounded. In Canarana , the antennae surpass elytral middle, elytra have distinct humeral carina (forming distinct keel), and the elytral apex is truncate (the inclusion of C. arguta Martins & Galileo, 2008 and C. exotica Galileo & Martins, 2001 ) is questionable, because they have different prothorax and different elytral apex). It differs from Apagomerina Gilmour, 1962 (genus with which can be compared in the key from Martins & Galileo 2014b), by the prothorax with notable laterobasal gibbosity (distinctly less protruding in Apagomerina ), and by the antennae in female not surpassing middle of elytra (notably surpassing in Apagomerina ). Cendiunopsis can be separated from Okamira Galileo & Martins, 2005 by the absence of long and dense setae on basal antennomeres (present in Okamira ). It differs from Potiapunga Galileo & Martins, 2013 , by the elytra parallel-sided (expanded in Potiapunga ), basal antennomeres without dense long setae (present in Potiapunga ), and epipleura without fringe of long setae (present in Potiapunga ).

Cendiunopsis gen. nov. can be included in the alternative of couplet “19” (Group D) from Martins & Galileo (2014a) (translated):

19(18). Prothorax with distinct lateral gibbosity............................................................... 19’ - Prothorax without distinct lateral gibbosity............................................................. 20 19’(19). Antenna in female notably surpassing middle of elytra.............................. Apagomerina Gilmour, 1962 - Antenna not surpassing middle of elytra.............................................. Cendiunopsis gen. nov.

The alternative of couplet “3” to species of “Group D” from Martins & Galileo (2014a) does not allow separating correctly the groups of genera, since some species included in genera coming from “antennomere III longer than scape, usually with more than twice length of scape” actually, have the antennomere III at most 1/3 longer than scape (thus, coming from the other option of the alternative of couplet: antennomere III with length, at most, 1/3 longer than scape or shorter than scape).
