Etymology

Named in honor of French naturalist Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d’Orbigny (6 September 1802 to 30 June 1857), Professor of Palaeontology at the Paris Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle , who explored South America , including Bolivia, during the 19 th century. The suffix - suchus is derived from the Ancient Greek name Σοῦχος, used for the Egyptian crocodile god Sobek .
