Genus Pelionella Kaydan , gen. nov.

Generic diagnosis. Adult female. Body oval, covered with white powdery wax. Ovisac woolly, white. Labium 3 segmented, longer than wide. Posterior pair of spiracles larger than anterior spiracles. Circulus generally present. Legs well developed, claw with a denticle; tarsal digitules hair-like, claw digitules knobbed, broader than tarsal digitules. Both pairs of ostioles well developed; anterior ostioles usually more weakly developed than posterior pair. Anal lobes well developed. Anal ring oval, with 1 inner and 1 or 2 outer rows of pores and 6 setae.
Dorsum. Antennae 9 segmented (8 or 9 segmented in P. balteata , 8 segmented in P. s a bl i a). Eyes oval, each on a small basal cone. Cerarii numbering 3–18 marginal pairs; anal lobe cerarii generally with 2 enlarged cerarian setae (P. ba l t e at a with up to 4); other marginal cerarii each with 2 enlarged setae and 2–10 trilocular pores, not on an elevated area; also with 1 to several dorsal cerarii, each with setae unlike those in marginal cerarii. Dorsal body setae in transverse segmental rows; some with trilocular pores but these never touching basal socket and setae not on an elevated area. Multilocular disc pores each with 2 rings of loculi ( Figure 1 View FIGURE 1 a), restricted to clusters, but sometimes only very few present on dorsum; oral collar tubular ducts always forming clusters, usually with multilocular pores; ducts either of 1 size (e.g., P. balteata and P. cycligera ) or (more usually) 2 sizes; larger ducts at least twice as wide as smallest ducts (generally 3 to 4 times wider); clusters arranged in transverse rows on all body segments. Minute discoidal pores always present within clusters but also scattered over dorsum. Trilocular pores often slightly larger than ventral trilocular pores, scattered over dorsum.
Venter. Setae mainly slender and hair-like but those on submargin spine-like and in longitudinal rows. Circulus oval. Multilocular disc pores of 2 kinds: (i) pores each with only 1 ring of 12 loculi, present in transverse rows on abdominal segments, especially around vulva; and (ii) pores each with 2 rings of 11 loculi, similar to those on dorsum; sometimes very few present but always in clusters together with oral collar tubular ducts; clusters concentrated in a submarginal band and sometimes medially in anterior abdominal segments and thorax. Oral collar tubular ducts of 2 or 3 of sizes, varying in length and width; present within clusters and in transverse rows on abdominal segments, especially around vulva, and also scattered medially in thorax. Quinquelocular pores generally present and usually most numerous medially in thorax and anterior abdominal segments. Trilocular pores scattered throughout. Minute discoidal pores generally restricted to within clusters but sometimes scattered over venter.
Comments. Danzig & Gavrilov-Zimin (2014) used the name " Pelionella " before it was made available in the present work. According to Article 16.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, 1999), this name must be considered unavailable from their work. Here the name is published in a way that meets the criteria of availability as specified by the ICZN (1999).
All 11 species of Pelionella can be separated from species in other related genera by the presence of: (i) multilocular disc pores in each dorsal cluster each with two rings of 11 loculi (all multilocular disc pores on other species have a single ring of 12 loculi) (the presence of two types of multilocular pores was noticed also by Danzig (2001) in P. ba l t e at us and P. manifectus ); (ii) dorsal setae not similar to cerarian setae, each without a trilocular pore near basal socket, and each not on an elevated area (in Peliococcus some dorsal setae are similar to cerarian setae, each with a trilocular pore near basal socket, and each on an elevated area), and (iii) dorsal oral collar tubular ducts present in clusters and of one or two sizes, each cluster with a smaller duct in the middle and with larger ducts clustered around it and generally along with multilocular disc pores (in Peliococcus and Erimococcus oral collar tubular ducts are also of one size or two sizes but they are never in the middle of the clusters).
Here two new species of Pelionella are described and nine species of Peliococcus are transferred to Pelionella , namely Peliococcus balteatus Green, P. cycliger Leonardi, P. glandulifer Borchsenius , P. grassianus Goux , P. manifectus Borchsenius, P. proeminens Goux , P. sablius Goux, P. stellarocheae Goux , and P. tritubulatus Kritchenko , as Pelionella balteata (Green) comb. nov., Pelionella cycliger (Leonardi) comb. nov., Pelionella glandulifer (Borchsenius) comb. nov., Pelionella grassiana (Goux) comb. nov., Pelionella manifecta (Borchsenius) comb. nov., Pelionella proeminens (Goux) comb. nov., Pelionella sablia (Goux) comb. nov., Pelionella stellarocheae (Goux) comb. nov. and Pelionella tritubulata (Kritchenko) comb. nov.
In addition, four species that were described by Lucien Goux from Mediterranean region are redescribed and illustrated because the original illustrations are not up to modern standards.
Etymology. The new genus name refers to the similarity of these species to those in the genus Peliococcus . Pelionella is a feminine genus name.
