Catapaguroides foresti McLaughlin, 2002 View in CoL
[New Japanese name: Tsunome-hime-yadokari] ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5. A B)
Catapaguroides foresti McLaughlin, 2002: 499 View in CoL , fig. 1 [type locality: Guam]. Catapaguroides kasei Osawa & Takeda, 2004: 1121 View in CoL , figs. 8–10 [type locality: Ie Island, Okinawa Islands, 20 m] [New synonymy].
Material examined. Non-type: 2 males (sl 1.1, 1.2 mm), Apo-gama Cave, Onna Village, Okinawa Island, 30 m, 18 January 2010, SCUBA diving, coll. Y. Yamada and N. Shirakawa, CBM-ZC 9978; 1 ovigerous female (sl 0.9 mm), Kashiwa-jima Island, Ohtsuki, Kochi Prefecture, subtidal, 30 June 2005, SCUBA diving, coll. E. Myorin, CBM-ZC 9980.
Coloration in life. See Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5. A B. Shield generally translucent, with red marking either side of midline. Posterior carapace translucent, with red making laterally. Ocular peduncles each with red longitudinal stripes dorsolaterally and ventrolaterally; cornea gray, with conspicuous brown spot terminally. Antennular peduncles banded with orange: basal segment with 1 middle band, penultimate segment with 1 proximal band, and ultimate segment with proximal and middle bands; aesthetasc-bearing portion of flagellum orangish, distal portion colorless. Antennal peduncles also banded with orange: second segment with broad band; fifth segment with 2 bands; antennal acicle with broad band; flagellum pale orange. Right cheliped with red-orange band on dorsal surface of dactylus at proximal margin; palm with red-orange patch on dorsomesial surface subdistally and broad orange-red band on dorsal surface proximally; dorsal surface of carpus with red-orange band proximally and distally, and similarly colored patch medially; merus with median red-orange band on dorsal surface. Left cheliped with red-orange subdistal and proximal bands on dorsal surface of dactylus; palm, carpus and merus with coloration as on right cheliped. Dactyli of ambulatory legs each with faint redorange tinge, and darker red-orange band proximally; propodi, carpi and meri each with proximal and middle red-orange bands.
Distribution and habitat. Guam and southern Japan, to 30 m. Often found in submarine caves.
Remarks. The present three specimens (two from Okinawa Island and one from Kochi Prefecture) agree well with the original descriptions of Catapaguroides foresti (described on the basis of 22 specimens from Guam) and C. kasei (described on the basis of four specimens from Ie Island, Okinawa Islands, Ryukyu Islands) in most diagnostic aspects. As noted by Osawa & Takeda (2004), C. kasei is morphologically very similar to C. foresti . The only distinguishing character cited by Osawa & Takeda (2004) is the relative length of the carpus of the left cheliped (1.7–2.0 times as long as the palm in C. kasei versus 1.5–1.6 times in C. foresti ). In the present specimens, the carpus of the left cheliped is 1.5–1.7 times the length of the palm, which is just intermediate between those given by Osawa & Takeda (2004). Consequently, it is obvious that this character is not reliable for species discrimination. We could not find other characters separating these two taxa and conclude that C. kasei is synonymous with C. foresti .
