Rana rufipes Inger, Stuart & Iskandar, 2008 View in CoL

( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 d)

Material examined. MNHN 2003.3407 (adult female; SVL 50.3 mm), between Lubuksao and Mukomuko, Province of Sumatra-Barat, elev. 440 m; other specimens observed in Maninjau, Mukomuko, and Lubuksao, Province of Sumatera Barat, elev. 400– 500 m.

Taxonomic comments. Stuart et al. (2006) showed existence of sibling species in Rana chalconota , Rana labialis and Rana raniceps . These authors also showed true Rana chalconota to be restricted to Java and southern Sumatra, true Rana labialis to be restricted to West Malaysia and true Rana raniceps to Borneo. Inger et al. (2008) described two new species from Sumatra. The specimen collected by us resembles more to the specimens allocated to R. cf. chalconota from Padang ( Inger & Iskandar 2005) because of its large size and relative short tibia (495 ‰ of SVL). Thus our specimen seems to belong to Rana rufipes though it is smaller than the 6 females studied by Inger et al. (2008). Nevertheless it is larger than the 15 specimens of Rana parvacola which measure 37.8–43.0 mm.

Distribution on Sumatra. Known from the province of Sumatra Barat.

Biology. This rather common species is active at day and especially by night. Specimens were observed in forest and in more open areas or in transitions between forests and fields. The species was seen in August and November.
