Material examined. MNHN 2002.0440 (male; SVL 316 mm, TaL> 42 mm; very bad condition), between Lubuksao and Mukomuko, Province of Sumatera Barat, elev. 420 m.

Taxonomic comments. This specimen is typical for the species as described in Morgan (1973); see also David & Vogel (1996).

Scalation: MSR 17; Ven 151; Sc> 26; anal paired; SL 10/10 (SL 5–6 entering orbit); Tem 2+2/2+2. Above black with a broad dark grey stripe on DSR 4–6 without crossbars. Head light rusty brown, without light spots but with a faint, lighter nuchal crossbar. Maxillary teeth 34, subequal.

Although this specimen found dead on road is in very bad condition, its pattern is typical of that of S. geminatus and not of Sibynophis melanocephalus (Gray, 1835) .

Distribution on Sumatra. Provinces of Sumatera Barat (first record in this work) and Bengkulu ( David & Vogel, 1996). This first record from Sumatera Barat represents a range extension along the Barisan Range by about 440 straight line kilometres from the previous sole known locality in Sumatra, Rejanglebong Prefecture.

Biology. This specimen was picked on a road crossing a relict tract of rocky primary forest.
