TYPE LOCALITY: Australia, Queensland, Darling Downs, Oakey Creek .
DISTRIBUTION: Australia; modern range along the eastern coast from Townsville in N Queensland to Sydney area in New South Wales; subfossil specimens from farther south in New South Wales ( Mahoney and Posamentier, 1975) and from S Victoria (see map in Watts and Aslin, 1981:180).
SYNONYMS: ultra.
COMMENTS: Phylogenetically closely related to P. nanus , an estimate based on spermatozoal morphology (Breed, 1983), electrophoretic data ( Baverstock et al., 1977 a, 1981), and morphology of skin, skull, and teeth ( Watts and Aslin, 1981).
