Myospalax fontanierii (Milne-Edwards, 1867) . Ann. Sci. Nat. (Paris), 7:376.
TYPE LOCALITY: China, Kansu .
DISTRIBUTION: Dry grasslands from Gansu, Ningxia ( Qin, 1991) through Hupeh and Anhui to Sichuan ( China).
SYNONYMS: baileyi , cansus , fontanus , kukunoriensis , rufescens , shenseius.
COMMENTS: Phylogenetically in same monophyletic group as M. smithii and M. rothschildi , which is the most derived group within the subfamily ( Lawrence, 1991). Fan and Shi (1982) recognized cansus and baileyi as species, but Li and Chen (1989) argued for their recognition as subspecies of M. fontanierii .
