Redescription. Head, antennae, legs and scutellum black, the former with metallic green reflections. Prothorax dark metallic green. Elytra orangish with, at least, the apical third metallic violaceous. Ventral surface of body black with metallic green or bluish reflections.

Apical segments of maxillary and labial palps cylindrical, longer than the two preceding combined. Antennae of males as in C. cardinalis , except segment 11 longer than 3. Antennae of females reaching the elytral apex, the outer segments conspicuously shortened. Pronotum ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1–6 ) regularly plicate on the entire surface, without punctures. Prosternum and sides of prothorax almost glabrous, shallowly plicate with fine punctures intermingled; in females, plicate and punctate. Elytra almost 4 times as long as prothorax; shining, glabrous, coarsely, uniformly punctate at the orangish area of the integument, the punctures becoming fine, shallow, and sparse at the metallic area. Apices truncate or barely sinuate; outer angle with a short spine, sutural angle not projected. Metasternum, coxae and episterna finely pubescent. Urosternites shining, pubescent at sides. Fifth urosternite gradually convergent apically, rounded at apex in males; in females, sinuous. Femora almost smooth and glabrous.

Types. Holotype male, described from “Brasilia” ( Aurivillius 1897), deposited in NHRS, examined by means of color slides.

Remarks. Caperonotus superbus was minutely redescribed by Napp (1993), including the mouth parts, endosternites, wing venation and terminalia of both sexes. It differs from the other species by the characters given in the key. C. superbus has been recorded from Peru (Ucayalli) and Brazil (Amazonas) ( Monné 2005).

Specimens examined. PERU, Ucayalli : Pucallpa, 1 male, V.1950 ( DZUP) . BRAZIL, Amazonas : Benjamin Constant, 1 female, IV.1964 (Diringshofen leg.) ( MZSP) .
