Figs 2, 5 View FIGURES 1–6
Orthoschema cardinale Bates, 1870: 393 View in CoL .
Orthostoma cardinale View in CoL ; Monné, 1993: 21 (cat.).
Caperonotus cardinalis View in CoL ; Napp, 1993: 659, figs. 1–33, 57, 58; Monné, 2005: 122 (cat.).
Redescription. Integument shining, dark metallic green. Elytra bicolored, orangish with the apical fourth metallic bluish-green to violaceous. Antennal scape and femora with very feeble metallic reflection. Scutellum orangish.
Apical segments of maxillary and labial palps conical, shorter than the two preceding combined. Antennal segment 3 about one third longer than segments 4 to 6; segments 7 to 10 decreasing in length; 11 as long as 3. Pronotum ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1–6 ) irregularly, transversely plicate with conspicuous punctures intermingled. Prosternum and sides of prothorax subopaque, densely punctorugose, without pubescence. Prosternum of females irregularly, transversely striated with punctures intermingled. Elytra about 3 times as long as prothorax; opaque, very densely, uniformly punctate on the entire surface. Apices feebly emarginated, sutural angle slightly projected. Mesosternum coarsely punctate. Metasternum and urosternites shining, punctation and pilosity very sparse. Fifth urosternite, in both sexes, transverse, subparallel at sides and truncate at apex. Femora sparsely punctate and pubescent.
Types. Holotype male from BRAZIL, Amazonas , Ega (now called Tefé), deposited in MNHN, examined by Napp (1993).
Remarks. Napp (1993) detailed and figured the morphology of C. cardinalis , including the mouth parts, endosternites, wing venation and the terminalia of both sexes. It has bicolored elytra as C. superbus ( Figs 3, 6 View FIGURES 1–6 ) and differentiates by the characters given in the key. C. cardinalis distributes in Peru (Loreto) and Brazil
(Amazonas) ( Monné 2005).
Specimens examined. BRAZIL, Amazonas : Benjamin Constant, 1 male, X.1952 , 1 male, II.1957 (J.C. Lima leg.) ( DZUP), 1 female, XI.1963 (Diringshofen leg.) ( MZSP) .
