Sphagnum recurvum P.Beauv. View in CoL
Sphagnum recurvum View in CoL is exclusively a New World species, not growing in Europe ( McQueen & Andrus 2006). Flatberg (1992) stated that S. recurvum View in CoL is endemic to northern South America, Central America and the southeastern part of the United States. In Europe the S. recurvum View in CoL complex consists of a group of five closely related and similar species ( S. angustifolium View in CoL , S. fallax View in CoL and S. flexuosum View in CoL , common in the Mediterranean basin, and S. brevifolium View in CoL and S. isoviitae View in CoL , more northernly distributed) ( Såstad & Flatberg 1994), but S. recurvum View in CoL in the strict sense is not thought to occur in Europe ( Hill et al. 2006). In the absence of revision of the herbarium specimens the presence in these areas should be considered doubtful and all the regional occurrences are covered by S. fallax View in CoL .
