Type species. Leptagrion macrurum ( Burmeister, 1839) by original designation (Selys 1876).
Etymology: Leptagrion = Lepto, Greek (λεπτός) for slender + agrion, neuter form of agrios (ἄγριος) meaning “wild”, which in damselflies is now used as an indicator that a genus belongs to the Coenagrionidae ( Fliedner 2006) . In reference to the slender abdomen of the species.
Generic characterization. Medium sized Coenagrionidae (40–51 mm), pale postocular spots and pale occipital bar absent, rear of the head pale (presumably pale in L. auriceps and an enlarged area black around the occipital foramen in L. vilelai sp. nov.), cerci longer than S10, basal 2/3 “C”–shaped with the concavity internally, superior and inferior internal border of the “C” enlarged and apical extremity of cerci bifurcated ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ), the dorsal branch smaller and covered with brush–like setae, ventral one folded in an inverted “T” ( L. bocainense ) or “U”–shape (other species), inclined medially; paraproct vestigial (plate–like) and ental surface of penis S3 with a medio–longitudinal laminar process.
Distribution. Brazil (Atlantic Forest in Brazil from Bahia to Santa Catarina).
