Sphagnum magellanicum Brid. View in CoL

There are s for Europe. National Parks and everal, mainly historical, findings of S. magellanicum and S. medium in the territory of Serbia. However, these two species have often been treated as synonyms in the past. Martinčič (1968) also accepted this synonymous concept in his research of Serbian bryoflora, which is probably why Serbian records of S. medium have been overlooked and not cited in recent national or regional checklists (e. g. Gajić et al., 1991 and Hodgetts 2015). Latest molecular studies have shown that these two species are clearly separated, both taxonomically and geographically ( Hassel et al. 2018). According to Hassel et al. (2018) S. magellanicum has been confined to the South America only, while S. medium together with newly described S. divinum is, among other continents, present in Europe as well. Since S. medium has been reported in Serbia previously under this name, we consider it present in Serbia, and all previous records confine to this species. However, there are no preserved herbarium specimens from Serbia, so it remains unclear weather any of these records belongs to the newly described S. divinum . Some of the previous reports of S. magellanicum / S. medium could be S. divinum , but we could not consider it in this list since no herbarium material is available. S. magellanicum should be rejected from the Serbian moss flora.
