Taxonomy. Original description: Barbus conocephalus Kessler, 1872: 50 [6], pl. 6, fig. 6, pl. 7, figs. 7–8 [Zeravshan River, Uzbekistan; syntypes: (6) ZMMU P-1513 (2), P-1518 (1)].— Afghanistan synonyms: None.—Revisions: Berg (1949: 700) as Barbus capito conocephalus .—Illustration: Kessler (1872: pl. 6, fig. 6, pl. 7, figs. 7–8) as Barbus concephalus .

Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by Berg (1949: 701) as Barbus capito conocephalus ; confirmed by Maksumov (1971), Moravec and Amin (1978), Coad (1981: 9).—Afghanistan materials: None.

Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Panj River Kunduz River.—General distribution: Eurasia: North Asia, Middle East: Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and northern Iran.—Habitat: This species lives in rivers and streams. Freshwater, brackish, marine.

Economic importance. Commercially important.

Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: NE (2023).—Threats: HAB, EUT, FIT.—Low sensitivity to human activities.—Keystone species.—Decline status: Unknown.—Low priority for conservation action.
